How Cultured Pearls Are Created
Pearls are formed when a grain of sand becomes lodged inside the shell of an oyster. The animals sensitive tissue reacts by secreting a substance called nacre which surrounds the irritant. Several layers gradually build around the object, eventually creating a pearl. Pearl farmers insert an irritant into the animals tissue, thereby forcing the creation of a pearl. The created pearl is called a cultured pearl.
Cultured pearl jewelry is becoming increasingly popular, as naturally occurring pearls are often misshaped and quite rare. The discovery and development of the process that makes cultured pearl jewelry allowed the pearl industry to become much more predictable. This has led to an increase in the popularity of pearl jewelry worldwide. Actually, cultured pearl jewelry has nearly replaced naturally occurring gems in todays jewelry market.
Colored Cultured Pearls
Cultured pearl jewelry comes in a wide rangeof styles, colors and shades. Traditional pearls are various shades of white. White pearls have overtones, or translucent colors, which appear over the white. Different lighting can bring out different overtone hues. New popular
colors include pastels, like pink and lavender, and different shades of black.
Cultured pearls are considered to be organic stones and they need special care. Because pearls are soft and delicate, they are easily damaged. Chemicals from perfume and hairspray can also cause damage to your pearls. It is advisable to put on all makeup, perfume, and hair products before putting on your pearls. Store your pearls separately from your other pieces of jewelry to keep them from being chipped or damaged by the harder pieces. Use a soft cloth or pouch. You might also consider having your cultured pearl jewelry restrung from time to time. If your strand breaks, you will risk damaging or loosing your pearls. Only use jewelry cleaners that are specified as safe to use on pearls.
Wearing Cultured Pearls
Cultured pearl jewelry is a great addition to your jewelry collection because of its versatility. No matter what color you choose, pearls are the perfect accessory to just about any outfit. Pair them with a suit for a feminine touch at work. Add a pair of pearl earrings to your around-town outfit for a touch of class, or use a whole set of pearl jewelry with your eveningwear ensemble. Whether you choose an elegant or casualoutfit, cultured pearl jewelry is the perfect finishing touch!
